Though the name of Robert Chambers and his tales are themselves woefully under-celebrated, he was a true master. While the mysterious play, purported to drive the reader mad, is certainly intriguing and integral, I find the characters far more engaging. Thanks for telling us about the problem. This was an odd collection. After he devoted himself solely to writing historical fiction.
Can art drive a person insane? This is a hard book to give a rating.

Kraljj first story, The Repairer of Reputationsis a great introduction to Chambers’s universe. And having had the experience, you would have to dissemanate it to others. Doing that, you appreciate the arc he takes from the futur This book is chiefly known for its opening quartet of stories of eldritch horrors and macabre dystopias.

Overall, this was really a 2. I felt like I was with every character he wrote, I felt like I was in every circumstance. A boy, describing a tussle he has had with this creature, shivers and sickens as he relates a certain detail.
The main protagonist reads a book called The King In Yellow, which is represented as a universally censored play which deeply disturbs him. This is a wonderful and creepy book. Refresh and try again. Subsequent stories build on the myth of the titular madness-induing play with somewhat diminishing returns, then shift gears into a cycle of less genre-inflected Parisian stories, of which “The Street of the First Shell”, set during in the bombardment of Paris by Prussian forces, is actually among the best developed pieces here.
Chambers returned to the weird genre in his later short story collections The Maker of Moons and The Tree of Heavenbut neither earned him such success as The King in Yellow. There’s so much going on in each of these short stories and many thematic elements that need to be teased out, but as a classic work of cosmic horror, you zutm need to look further. I fell silent for 20 minutes, after The Repairer of Reputations, as I tried to figure out what I had just read.
I’m taking my time, reading only a few pages a day, to better understand the complexity of each story.
